Beyond the Box – January 2011

I prefer artists who think not only out of the box, but beyond the box. Look for artists who give us new ways to think about boxy geometrical forms.  Some bridge the gap between abstraction and realism:  María Brito at the Frost and Enrique Martínez Celaya at Gary Nader Fine Art.  Others help us contemplate the magical interplay of form and materials: El Anatsui at Miami Biennale, Marta Chilindrón at Alejandra von Hartz Gallery, Mauro Giaconi at Dotfityone Gallery, Ralph Provisero at Wynwood Project Space.  For pure painterliness, see Gustavo Acosta at Panamerican Art Projects and Rafael Soriano at the Lowe.
