Installation and assemblages by Kyle and John Torina painting shown in one view of “Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted”

Wulf Barsch, Arless Day, Josephine Haden, Kyle, Richard Lytle, John Torina ConcernAbout Florida’s Environment Highlighted in ‘Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted’ Show

As developments in the Deepwater Horizon Well catastrophe continue to remind us of the fragility of our environment, an exhibition of landscapes that includes visual references to the ongoing assault on Florida’s scant remaining pristine forests and mangroves seems particularly relevant.

In her review of “Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted” at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, art critic Janet Batet notes that “nowadays this subject matter stands as a metaphor for social and political inquiry, fertile ground for debating our positions on the preservation and future of our planet.”Highlights of the exhibition include large-scale assemblages and an installation by Kyle, fantasy landscapes by Josephine Haden, winner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts 2008-09 Fellowship; “cosmic imagery” of Wulf Barsch, combining Egyptian and Islamic references with geometrical and astrological elements; American Impressionist landscapes by plein air painter John Torina; collages by Arless Day, whose works create a place in time like a movie director building a set; and Richard Lytle, whose paintings were included in the legendary “Sixteen Americans” exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art.

“What I want from viewers of my paintings is for you to look closely into my art and imagine what is going on within its four corners. Look deep. Ask yourself what is happening? What can you feel from my use of colors, textures, background, sky and earth? Where is the motion taking you?

You will realize that a little bit of me is inside each of my paintings, looking out at you; as you are looking into my world. The wonderful thing is that I am a painter of all my times and therefore I am a goddess creating my own world. To paint on canvas is to create an everlasting wonderful power over a specific world on a canvas.” W.W.

Humberto Castro. Traces of Migration

In his third solo exhibition by Cuban emigré Humberto Castro, he explores again the visual metaphors or fables based on the concept of historic immigration as the foundation for today’s society.

“Like a poet, Castro imbues his images with lyrical nuances without diminishing their impact” wrote in his catalogue essayJorge H. Santis, Curator of Collections at the Fort Lauderdale Museum and the curator of its 2000-01 one-person exhibition of Castro’s works from Paris.

Like works in the previous shows, First 15-Year Retrospective in Nov. 2006 and Contemporary Fables in 2008, Castro’s new paintings include references to the exodus of Cuban“balseros” and the U.S. “wet foot-dry foot” policy of allowing Cubans to stay if they can reach land.

Javier Valle Pérez. Connotation in Abstraction

“The word connotation refers to things or attributes that the word brings to mind, any idea or notion suggested or associated with the word. I named this exhibition Connotation in Abstraction because my work contains the same characteristics: iconographies and undefined forms that suggest something familiar; little abstract figures wanting to be or become something we can relate to. The pictorial language I use is the kind of abstraction that can be understood or recognized. Taking as a point of reference objects such as toys, planes, animals and machines, I tap into my imagination to bring to life miniature worlds of make belief”.

Recent Works.

RDZ Fine Art introduces the much celebrated work of artist Zach Sawan with his “Pretty Girls” series: “These paintings of girls whom I know represent a deep infatuation as well as woeful acceptance of what will never be. These young women are unflinchingly beautiful; they never take a bad picture, they are full of vim and because of a variety of circumstances we will remain nothing more than friends at best. I have attempted to communicate the implicit emotions by creating portraits that are unflattering as well as slightly disturbing. Their beauty has been skewed but not altogether hidden, for they should be celebrated for their splendor, yet I cannot ignore my grievances. These are the first of an ever-growing collection of my “pretty girls.” - Z. Sawan.

Juan Navarrete, Construction No. 4, Acrylic on Canvas, 2006, 24 x 36 in.
Until October 15
Juan Navarrete. Longing and FascinationPast and present works.

Navarrete engages symbolism and impassioned color schemes to deftly appeal to our sense of nostalgia and our desire to belong. Outwardly his works depict the Caribbean landscape with abstractions of vegetation and vessels; yet further reading reveals complex overlays of genesis, permanence (or lack thereof) and sensuality. Through it all,Navarrete reminds us that the experience of exile is ever-present in his, and our, existence.

Alhambra (Antiques) is the junction of European furnishing, art gallery, and cultural space. Exhibits are curated to include past and contemporary offerings in design, painting, sculpture, photography and music.

Humberto Castro, Flora, Oil on Canvas, 2010, 42 1/2 x 55 in.

Humberto Castro. Traces of Migration

Castro’s new paintings in his third solo exhibition at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, continue to suggest the exodus of Cuban “balseros” and the U.S. “wet foot-dry foot” policy of allowing Cubans to stay if they can reach land.

“But Castro’s work encompasses much wider historic references,” according to gallery owner Virginia Miller. “These paintings are visual metaphors or fables based on the concept of historic immigration as the foundation for today’s society.” Among the paintings is an eight-foot tower of battered suitcases. “Everyone who sees this exhibition is drawn to the suitcases,” Miller noted. “All of us have special memories of trips we have taken or want to take.”

Castro, a member of the renowned 1980s generation of Cuban artists that includes José Bedia and Rubén Torres Llorca, has been exhibiting and winning awards si

Sandra Jones Campbell.
Recent Works.

RDZ Fine Art welcomes Modern Master Sandra Jones Campbell to its growing list of represented artists. Sandra’s depiction of social and political scenes reflect both her professional respect for the 30′s style German ExpressionistsMax Beckman, George Grosz and Otto Dix, and her uniquely gentle wit.

Multiple figures populate lively acrylics on paper or canvas images that blend Sandra’s optimism and candor, along with the artist’s keen visual skill: balancing color, form composition, humor and subject matter.

Sandra’s work’s will be on display beginning with the Coral Gables First Friday Art Walk on October 1st, as well as will be part of a group show with Zach Sawan on November 5th, 2010.

La Disciplina en Pintura y EsculturaAbout Concrete Abstract Art

“It is not uninteresting to see how the luxuriant nature of the American continent, its intense baroque style and its magical realism have engendered a movement as rigorous as that of concrete abstract art. The asceticism of this artistic tendency seems to contradict the eloquence characteristic of everything American which manifested itself since the florid times of the chroniclers, passing through modernism until the present day. Nevertheless, that is how it has been. In Uruguay and Argentina, where the “Madí” movement was born; in Venezuela, where cybernetics and optical art came into their own; in Brazil, mother country of concrete poetry; or in Colombia, where the abstraction represented by EduardoRamírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín, among others, has flourished….” Carlos Luis

Enrique Campuzano Opus 794, oil on canvas, 19 x 15.75 in

Enrique Campuzano. Small Formats.

“When I first got acquainted with (classical) music, it made a great emotional impact on me. The exquisite mix of symphony sounds with choir displays and thunderous fanfares made the experience an unforgettable one.Later on, I discovered the structures that exist within those musical Masterpieces. Many years have passed since then, but I am still taken aback by the extraordinary spiritual and hearing capacity of those involved in their creation.

Little by little, as my appreciation for music deepened, I started discovering a more intimate kind of music; that which is created with only a few instruments and which magic has always mesmerized me.I walked the same path with poetry, going from heroic declamation to the whispering sorrows of the Sonnet.

I was born a craftsman, and I became a painter. Big formats have always been my goal, but I also enjoy the small formats to which I treat myself from time to time. “ E.C.

Explore the Culture of Nature

Nomade is paying homage to the natural environment we live in through artwork depicting the raw and abstract allure and aggression of animals, plants and peoples. One of the most distinct recent social changes in the United States has been the incredible refocus of popular culture on environment conservation and outcry.

Nomade will also have a suggested $10 donation box in place, in addition to beverages provided. All donations will go to Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, the official foundation administering the oil spill clean-up.

The artists interpreting the culture of the natural world are Miami natives Danny Catania and Samuel Gualitieri, New World alumni Reinier Gamboa and Juan Travieso, as well as Norwegian photographer Stian Roenning, Dominican photographer Aida Tejada and French sculptor Pierre Traversat.

Featured Artist for October: Debra Cortese

“Nature entrances me. The harmony and patterns, symmetry, geometry, vibrant and soothing colors, the protective camouflage for flora and fauna, healing energies, medicinal properties, the intricate beauty…

Everything on our planet shares a core energy, a vital life force that animates and supports all growth and renewal. In nature, when this energy is balanced and uninhibited by human interference, the flow is smooth, perfection exists. When I am truly in touch with nature, the feelings I experience are incredibly magical, full of wonder and joy!

My art is created with the conscious intention to share our interconnectedness with the amazingly powerful energy of nature.” D.C.

Fanny Sanin, Acrilico No. 4, 2009, 44 x 42 in.

Ramírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín Discipline in Painting and Sculpture /

GroveHouse Artist
Featured Artist for June: Wendy Wood

“What I want from viewers of my paintings is for you to look closely into my art and imagine what is going on within its four corners. Look deep. Ask yourself what is happening? What can you feel from my use of colors, textures, background, sky and earth? Where is the motion taking you?

You will realize that a little bit of me is inside each of my paintings, looking out at you; as you are looking into my world. The wonderful thing is that I am a painter of all my times and therefore I am a goddess creating my own world. To paint on canvas is to create an everlasting wonderful power over a specific world on a canvas.” W.W.
