STRANGE FRUITS
Gallery 109 & Anthony R. Abraham Family Gallery
This exhibition gathers a selection of recent work by Marielle Plaisir, a multimedia artist based in Miami, Florida. Working across various disciplines, from painting to drawing, to sculpture, to fashion and performance, Plaisir creates intense visual experiences that explore her French-Caribbean heritage against the backdrop of Postcolonialism. She addresses prejudice through the lens of body politics and identifies moments of struggle and social control over the Black body. In her works, she carefully dissects control systems to present us with new, freeing, and empowering realities and counternarratives.
Curated by Yuni Villalonga, Director of Curatorial Programs

Embellish Me: Works from the Collection of Norma Canelas Roth and William Roth
During the 1970s, artists in Los Angeles and New York boldly challenged conventional norms by pushing the boundaries of form, color, and meaning. While the art movements of conceptualism, Pop Art, and Minimalism gained significant attention and acclaim, there were also artists working with equal commitment to redefine aesthetic value and challenge established hierarchies in the art world. Many artists featured in this exhibition were affiliated with the Pattern and Decoration movement. They reveled in the handmade and sought to legitimize aesthetic ideas beyond those that preoccupied the mainstream art world,
This exhibition is presented in honor of Norma Canelas Roth (1943–2022). A tireless advocate for artists, Roth felt deeply passionate about collecting art that was often neglected by mainstream art dealers, critics, and curators. Born in Puerto Rico, she lived much of her life in Florida and remained committed to collecting in depth; in fact, this exhibition presents a selection of works collected by Roth, many of which made by artists affiliated with the Pattern and Decoration movement, which she collected extensively.
Embellish Me: Works from the Collection of Norma Canelas Roth and William Roth is presented in collaboration with the Tampa Museum of Art.
Works By:
Rudy Autio, Lynda Benglis, Paul Brach, Brad Davis, Frank Faulkner, Valerie Jaudon, Richard Kalina, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt, Pat Lasch, Kim MacConnel, Ree Morton, Tony Robbin, Lucas Samaras, Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Scott, Kendall Shaw, Ned Smyth, John Torreano, Ann Turnley, Betty Woodman, Robert Zakanitch.

Avery Singer: Unity Bachelor
Special Exhibition / 3rd Floor
A leading artist of her generation, Avery Singer uses innovative tools to create iconic, complex paintings that interpret contemporary social realities and technologies. The artist’s large-scale paintings portray worlds that emerge from digital renderings and take shape through manual and digital airbrush techniques, liquid and solid masking, and complex layering processes. Singer’s work has often engaged modernist and avant-garde movements to cite the radical potential for painting. Works in this exhibition reference Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) (1912), through which Singer explores issues of form, memory, and the sensation of falling.
Apr 6 – Oct 8, 2023:
Denzil Forrester: We Culture
Special Exhibition / 2nd Floor
“Denzil Forrester: We Culture” brings together twenty paintings and a dozen drawings from the Grenada-born artist’s first seven years of production, 1978 to 1985. One of the preeminent British and Caribbean painters of the last few decades, Forrester has become an important influence on a generation of younger artists.
May 5 – Nov 26, 2023:
Aglaé Bassens: Emptiful
Ground Floor / Ray Ellen and Allan Yarkin Gallery
With a practice rooted in observation and critical analysis, Aglaé Bassens creates alluring and poignant depictions of everyday life. “Aglaé Bassens: Emptiful” is the debut solo museum presentation for the Brooklyn-based painter. In these recent works, Bassens draws from her experience of becoming a new parent, using the opportunity to take on the duality of life’s passage—love and grief, fulfillment and apprehension.
May 5 – Nov 12, 2023:
Claire Tabouret: Au Bois d’Amour
Ground Floor
“Claire Tabouret: Au Bois d’Amour” features new works by the French painter, whose practice examines complex representations of identity and sexuality, the nuances of human intimacy, and the nostalgic passing of time. Across two galleries on ICA Miami’s ground floor, Tabouret displays her experimentation with format and technique, showcasing several of her “Fluff” paintings, a set of monoprints, and a unique, artist-designed rug.
May 5 – Nov 26, 2023:
Hudinilson Jr.: Tension Zone
Ground Floor / Dr. Shulamit Katzman Gallery
Ground Floor / Kadre Family Gallery
Hudinilson Jr. (b. 1957, São Paulo; d. 2013, São Paulo) is one of the most significant Brazilian artists of his generation. The first exhibition of his work in a US museum, “Hudinilson Jr.: Tension Zone” is an introductory survey of a figure who is increasingly becoming an important reference point for younger artists for his artistic output but also for his antiestablishment attitude and participation in experimental collectives, workshops, public interventions, and exhibitions. Coming of age during the most repressive time of the military dictatorship in Brazil, Hudinilson Jr. constantly placed himself at social and artistic margins and made his life indistinguishable from his artistic practice in ways that still find resonance today.

A Fine Line: Highlights from the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation
The works featured in this exhibition demonstrate how the processes of mark-making and linear demarcation—be they sculptural, gestural, lyrical, conceptual, or geometrical—form a thematic thread running through the Berkowitz Contemporary Foundation’s collection of Modern and Contemporary Art. They also prompt viewers to consider the ways in which artists, working across several major stylistic movements over the course of the past sixty years, have used line to express a vast array of meanings through an equally wide range of shapes, patterns, and textures.
This exhibition was curated by the Lowe’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Lowe Art Museum.
March 23, 2023 – September 24, 2023:
Transcendent Clay / Kondo: A Century of Japanese Ceramic Art
This exhibition features works by three generations of the Kyoto-based Kondo ceramic dynasty. Ranging from traditional porcelain vessels to meditative sculptures cast from the artist’s body and accented with a “silver mist” glaze, this compelling exhibition serves as a bridge between the past and the present as well as meditation on the future of Japanese ceramics.
This exhibition was curated by Joe Earle and organized by the Lowe Art Museum. Joe Earle was the Director of Japan Society Gallery in New York until 2012 and has held leadership positions in Asian art departments at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
April 25, 2023 - March 3, 2024:
ARTLAB | Spirits of Time: Netsuke from the Joseph and Elena Kurstin Collection
ArtLab@the Lowe is an upper-level seminar, which—hosted by the University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum each year—is designed to give students hands-on curatorial experience. The lead faculty changes with each ArtLab, as does the theme, but the program's approach remains the same for each iteration. Specifically, ArtLab participants mine the museum's permanent collection (or, in exceptional cases, private collections) to thematically research and document checklist items while creating a unique temporary exhibition and small companion publication.
This year's ArtLab will highlight miniature masterpieces carved from a variety of media and spanning several centuries. This student-curated exhibition will complement works on view in the Lowe's Taplin Gallery for Asian Art as well as Transcendent Clay: Kondo/A Century of Japanese Ceramic Art, opening March 23, 2023. ArtLab students will also spend a week in mid-March in Kyoto, Japan, where they will engage in transnational, transcultural exchange with University of Kyoto students as well as visiting local artists and artisans, museums, and historic sites in person. Through this program, the Lowe truly touches lives and transforms the University of Miami student experience!
May 25, 2023 – September 17, 2023:
Expressions of Self: Arnold Newman’s Artist Portraits in Context
This permanent collection exhibition pairs twenty Arnold Newman portraits alongside artworks created by the artists represented therein. Spanning several decades, the selected photographs demonstrate Newman’s pioneering approach to creating “environmental portraits,” a term later attributed to his signature style that he began in 1941 in New York City. In some instances, Newman’s photographs incorporate small details of actual artworks created by the subjects. Many of these elements are echoed in the pieces on view that range from gestural abstraction to Pop art to Surrealism. When the pairs are exhibited together, they build upon Newman’s environmental portraits and allow viewers to gain a deeper understanding of his innovative approach.
This exhibition was curated by the Lowe’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions, Caitlin Swindell and organized by the Lowe Art Museum.
June 15 – October 8, 2023:
Sandra Ramos: Entropydoscopes
Sandra Ramos works in a range of media, including painting, printmaking, collage, video, and installation-based work. As both an artist and an independent curator, she is interested in wide-ranging concepts, from cultural identity and migration to social media. For Entropydoscopes, Ramos created light boxes featuring kaleidoscopic videos composed of images that are personally meaningful to her. Some elements have recognizable details, others are completely distorted. As a result, viewers catch glimpses of the artist's memories through entropy (a state of disorder), transforming her kaleidoscopic cylinders into channels to an uncertain realm.
Sandra Ramos: Entropydoscopes was curated by Lance Fung and Lowe Curator, Caitlin Swindell.

My Name is Maryan
Curated by Alison Gingeras
A monographic presentation of four decades of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and film by the iconoclastic, groundbreaking Polish-born artist Maryan. Drawing upon new scholarship and a trove of never before exhibited works, My Name is Maryan will be the first retrospective to examine all periods of Maryan’s life and work. Maryan’s extraordinary biography and prolific oeuvre represent a deeply moving monument to the perseverance of the human spirit and the power of art to work through traumatic loss.
Drawing upon new scholarship and a trove of never-before-exhibited works from the artist’s estate, My Name is Maryan will be the first retrospective to holistically examine all periods of Maryan’s life and work. Throughout the museum, Maryan’s extraordinary biography and prolific oeuvre represent a deeply moving monument to the perseverance of the human spirit and the power of art to work through traumatic loss. Credited as being among the first artist-eyewitnesses to directly depict their experiences of the Shoah, Maryan’s unique approach to figurative art strove solidarity across cultures and generations.
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) is dedicated to making contemporary art accessible to diverse audiences – especially underserved populations – through the collection, preservation and exhibition of the best of contemporary art and its art historical influences.
The Museum of Contemporary Art is located in North Miami, it expanded from the original Center of Contemporary Art, which was inaugurated in 1981 in a modest single gallery space. The Museum opened a new building in 1996 designed by Charles Gwarthmey of GSNY, who worked in conjunction with Miami firm Gelabert-Navia in the creation of the space. The museum is a site for discovering new artists, contemplating the work of contemporary masters, and learning about our living cultural heritage.

A thematic survey of the acclaimed Miami-based Cuban American painter’s abstract work, Baruj Salinas: 1972–2022 spans a half-century of his artistic career. Whether imagining landscapes, seas, skies, or cosmic space, Salinas continually attempts to give shape to the formation of the universe, combining a vision of elemental flux and transformation with the traces of ancient alphabets or an imaginary language. The exhibition features forty works borrowed from Miami collections and includes paintings, works on paper, glazed ceramics, and an artist’s book.
Baruj Salinas: 1972–2022 is produced by the Cuban Legacy Gallery, MDC Special Collections at Miami Dade College, in collaboration with the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora.

House, Gardens, and Collections.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens preserve its cultural and environmental resources to engage people in connecting with the past, understanding the present, and shaping the future. Built in 1916, Vizcaya features a Main House filled with a decorative art collection and 10 acres of formal gardens.
About
In 1952, James Deering’s nieces conveyed Vizcaya to Dade County (now Miami-Dade). In the following year, the estate opened as the Dade County Art Museum within the County’s Park and Recreation Department. The museum’s original name demonstrates that Vizcaya did not then seem a “historic” property and that South Florida’s cultural landscape has changed dramatically over the past 60 years. The museum features the Main House with 34 decorated rooms showcasing over 2,500 art objects and furnishings; ten acres of European-inspired formal gardens; a significant orchid collection totaling 2,000 specimens; and 25 acres of endangered primary growth forests. Vizcaya is accredited by the American Association of Museums and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1995 for its significant architecture, landscapes, interiors, and collections.
