This month’s movie is “Of Men and Gods”, a powerful story showing the lives of openly gay men in Haiti, a society in which homosexuality is looked down upon. The film depicts the Vodou religion within Haiti and the solace that these men found in it as they explored their potential and sexuality in a spiritual way.

Michael Gray solo exhibition Onshore at Pinecrest Gardens (1100 S. Red Road, Pinecrest) opens today Sunday, August 4, 11 am – 1 pm. Free. Gray is an avid fisherman and South Florida resident, extremely concerned artist with the treatment, preservation and the monitoring of our water systems. Onshore is a series of works composed of paintings, linocut prints and monotype prints. These works depict the impact of the Karenia Brevis algae blooms, known best as red tide, and the overall state of Floridian water systems.

Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti is a documentary that depicts the rituals of three Vodou cults whose origins stem from Africa. The viewer is introduced to a pantheon of spirits who communicate to their worshippers. Friday, August 9, Performance at 7 pm. ICA Miami and Guadalupe Maravilla present Los Purifiers, a new performance by the New York- and Richmond-based artist that aims to create a new visual memory for the entangled genealogy of border-crossing stories. As part of the performance, Maravilla will initiate a sound activation intended to cleanse phobias and blockages resulting from an accelerating political climate.

Gravity Hustle represents the push and pull of the invisible and indescribable; the constant human struggle to explain complex realities. Gravity Hustle is each artists’ personal analysis of different intangible abstract processes. Opening Reception Saturday, August 10, 6 – 9 pm.
For the past three years, summers at Vizcaya have been marked by a unique performance – 1,000 people coming together in a glowing processional of illuminated lanterns. This year’s illuminated spectacular will be bigger than ever! Arrive early and enjoy food trucks and live entertainment starting at 7:00 p.m. Then get ready for the parade to begin promptly at 8:30 p.m. as night falls on the gardens. Tickets are $10 for the general public.
