On Thursday, August 29, 3 – 5 pm, photographer Gary Monroe will discuss his series South Beach, 1977-1986 on view at the Frost Art Museum FIU. In 1977, Monroe embarked on a decade-long project to photograph the aging Jewish community in South Beach. He had grown up around this community and sought to capture the vibrancy and slow decline of this close-knit neighborhood.

If you work in galleries, libraries, archives or museums and are interested in how to engage with Wikipedia, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is hosting an event on September 17 that is tailor-made for you. A presentation for Miami-area cultural institutions on the use and impact of Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and other wiki tools. Engagement personnel from Miami-area galleries, libraries, archives and museums (GLAMs) are invited to this event. Instructions will be given on how to identify, gather and post materials for contribution to these platforms.Mary Mark Ockerbloom, Wikipedian in Residence at Science History Institute, will be coming to Vizcaya to demonstrate how cultural institutions are establishing GLAM-Wiki programs to tell their stories and share their collections on a global scale on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons.

Sunday, September 22, 12 – 2, Free at Deering Estate: Artist talk with Virginia Overton as she discusses her sculptural installation Untitled (Late Bloomer) on site at the Deering Estate. With this work, Overton repurposes the bed of her Dodge Ram 150 pickup truck and fashions it into a habitat for native aquatic plants. This piece will evolve throughout the course of its installation as the plants continue to grow. This discussion will explore the conception and construction of this work, as well as Overton’s artistic career.

Myrna and Sheldon Palley Lecture Series Feautring Joyce J. Scott: MacArthur “Genius” Fellow, Joyce J. Scott is best known for her figurative sculpture and jewelry using free-form off-loom bead weaving techniques similar to the peyote stitch, as well as blown glass, and found objects. As an African-American, feminist artist, Scott unapologetically confronts difficult themes as diverse as her subjects. Her art leverages its impact with her wry, subversive humor, and engages hardened stereotypes that demand honest examination. At the Lowe Art Museum, UM Campus on Thursday, September 26, 7 – 9 pm.

What it Means to be Hispanic in America Today & Jazz @ MOCA - Museum of Contemporary Art

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to present an expanded event as part of its Jazz at MOCA series on Friday, Sept. 27 including a performance by singer Leslie Cartaya, a panel discussion and O, Miami. The conversation will be moderated by Antonio Martinez, former district director of Dade County Public Schools. Speakers will comprise of Hispanic artists of various mediums including writer N.J. Perez, the author of “Heart of a Cuban”, artist Edison Penafiel, who is an exhibiting artist of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition, and singer Leslie Cartaya. Guests may also walkthrough MOCA’s exhibition “South Florida Cultural Consortium,” with free admission.
