George Bethea. For Darby: A Retrospective Exhibition @ University of Miami Gallery - Wynwood

For Darby is a survey exhibition of George Bethea’s paintings from 2006 through 2019 and is in honor of Walter Darby Bannard (September 23, 1934 – October 2, 2016). Over their 25 year friendship, Bannard has championed Bethea’s paintings in numerous essays. Opening Reception on July 13, 6 – 9 pm at University of Miami space in Wynwood (2750 NW 3rd. Guadalupe Maravilla: Los Purifiers @ ICA / Institute of Contemporary Art

Friday, August 9, Performance at 7 pm. ICA Miami and Guadalupe Maravilla present Los Purifiers, a new performance by the New York- and Richmond-based artist that aims to create a new visual memory for the entangled genealogy of border-crossing stories. As part of the performance, Maravilla will initiate a sound activation intended to cleanse phobias and blockages resulting from an accelerating political climate.

ICA Miami welcomes Berlin-based producer Mechatok to First Fridays. Mechatok’s performance will be complemented by Shanghai-based visual artist Kim Laughton. “[Mechatok] is still only 21 but over the last few years has slowly developed one of the most distinctive sounds in contemporary electronic music: equal parts blissful and melancholic club-ready pop miniatures. In the Sculpture Garden, ICA Miami and ARTECHOUSE Miami have teamed with Ketel One Vodka to present a unique augmented reality cocktail experience.

What it Means to be Hispanic in America Today & Jazz @ MOCA - Museum of Contemporary Art

Panel Discussion at 6 pm, Jazz at MOCA at 8 pm on Friday, September 27. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is thrilled to present an expanded event as part of its Jazz at MOCA series on Friday, Sept. 27 including a performance by singer Leslie Cartaya, a panel discussion and O, Miami. The conversation will be moderated by Antonio Martinez, former district director of Dade County Public Schools. Speakers will comprise of Hispanic artists of various mediums including writer N.J. Perez, the author of “Heart of a Cuban”, artist Edison Penafiel, who is an exhibiting artist of the South Florida Cultural Consortium Exhibition, and singer Leslie Cartaya. Guests may also walkthrough MOCA’s exhibition “South Florida Cultural Consortium,” with free admission.

Gary Nader proudly presents Ricardo Cisneros: Tierra Sublime (Namibia: Sublime Land), a series of 30 spectacular photographs from Mr. Cisneros travels to Namibia, Southern Africa. All proceeds from the sales of these photographs will be donated to Global Empowerment Mission to help on the recovery of NW Bahamas after Hurricane Dorian. The exhibition will be on view from October 18 through November 30.

Alternative Facts, an interactive public performance by Paul Ramírez Jonas that explores the concept that truth is a social contract. Over the course of two days in two different parts of the city, the artist will engage individual members of the public in a series of actions that call into question commonly understood ideas about facts, authority, exchange, value, and trust.
