The History of Discrimination in Miami @ Coral Gables Museum

Today, January 23rd at 6 pm at the Coral Gables Museum. Join Seth Bramson to discuss Miami’s history of discrimination, spanning Jim Crow, segregation and years of “restricted clientele” when Jews were not permitted to stay at certain hotels or belong to certain private clubs. The lecture will be accompanied by materials from the Bramson archive, including booklets, brochures, photographs, postcards, bulletins and even signs from the era.

Enjoy the beautiful Miami springtime atmosphere with a group ride from the Coral Gables Museum through our lush city streets to Matheson Hammock Park, a 1930s New Deal development that remains as Coral Gables’ largest public park. Then, take a short break with hot dogs and hamburger barbecue. No bike or helmet? No problem. Rentals are available at the museum so that all participants can enjoy the nature trails on this beautiful Miami Sunday.

Carlos Estevez Book Signing @ Books & Books

The book highlights Carlos Estevez’ work from 1992 to 2018, as featured in a current exhibition organized by the Tucson Museum of Art. The exhibit is guest-curated by Dr. Carol Damian and features a limited edition, full color, hardbound, catalogue, Carlos Estevez: Entelechy($50) with an essay by Dr. Damian. Damian will introduce the artist, who will present a slideshow of his work, followed by a Q&A with Cristina Nosti of Books & Books.

Today is the last day to see the Coral Gables Museum exhibit. Castles in the Sky, an exhibition on Fantasy Architecture in Contemporary Art. Jarring the laws of actual architecture, the imagined palace functions as a very real foundation, buttress, and pillar for Castles in the Sky. From Claes Oldenburg’s proposal to replace the Washington Monument with gigantic scissors to Laurie Simmons’ photograph of candy castles atop a cake weathering a blizzard of confectionary “snow,” the works here delight and intrigue.
