M.D.  Kanter. The Colors of Dreams

Born in Colombia, Maria Delia Bernate Kanter, (1927 – 2010) signed her work  as M. D. Kanter, and mastered her own unique style of painting shaping intense color into impressions, forms, and movement inspired by nature. She first exhibited her paintings in 1964, in Washington, D.C., and continued for more than 40 years receiving critical acclaim.

“To see her work is to feel the exuberance of Latin America’s soul...”, wrote Guillermo De La Torre in 1982, Dean of the School of Architecture & Design of the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico.  He added, “...Nature has been the principal theme that has dominated the repertoire of this consummate artist, especially the heat and passion reflected in the tropics. Her paintings are of strong pigmentation in chromatic equilibrium.  Her expressiveness seems to spill out over the canvas, as if a long-contained force had been broken free. We observe her life and her environment in her paintings – her moments of joy, sadness, intimacy, anger, and excitement -- and are swept away into this world as we gaze at her work.”

In 1972, Alejandro Carrion, Ecuadorian journalist and poet wrote  “The Colors of Dreams ®” after her exhibit at the Inter-American Development Bank Gallery.  He wrote, “...Kanter brings to deep sleep the colors of day and from the unconscious brings them back to consciousness, converting color into an indescribable and magical assembly where poetry overpowers imagery and is converted into the essence of her paintings.”  Since then, “ The Colors of Dreams ®” was adopted by the artist as her slogan.
