Erika King, a Retrospective 1965 to 2012
Endowed with a passion for exploring a variety of mediums and technique, Erika King has chosen collage as her medium of choice, since it allows the transformation of photos, media articles, mementos, and other memorabilia adhered to the canvas to tell a story and speak it’s own language. An emotive colorist, Erika uses vibrant splashes of paint full of energy and promise as well as a subdued palette in her collages to express reflection and introspection of her artwork.
In this retrospective exhibition entitled Evolution of Spirit, Erika explores her deep involvement with spiritual reflections and connections, using fragments of sheet music, labels, stamps, torn foreign currency interspersed with iconic images of the Mona Lisa, Statue of Liberty, Angels and, other American folklore.
Different dimensions of Erika’s artwork are commissioned corporate, commemorative, celebrity and sports collages for which she is widely recognized. Born in Philadelphia, she was educated in Germany, Switzerland, Paris and Spain. Her work has been exhibited throughout Europe, as well as New York, San Francisco, Caracas and Miami.
She has lived and maintained a studio in Coconut Grove since 1970.
