June 10 – July 8
“From his beginnings as an artist, Federico Vegas Chumaceiro, has dedicated himself to deconstruct, with his gaze and his pulse, images, figures, objects and landscapes, slowly unweaving and recreating what he sees, from a very particular and personal perspective full of poetry and mystery.
Those that have followed the evolution of his work since the 90s, when he was starting to exhibit his material, might have noticed how his microscope picks up a sliver of space-time and dissects it, reveling extensively in it, to finally solve it as a witty Ostomachion or synthesizing its essence.
This is it, again. Vegas Chumaceiro moved his attention away for a brief period in which he was absorbed by the content instead of the continent to which he frequently looks with great pleasure, when isn’t the canvas or the paper. The pages of his books, with their variegated symbols, distracted him from the underlying current, essay or story and with forensic eyes he began to discover the manifestation of new visual languages and meanings in the words designs.
Sometimes in the real sense that it symbolizes, other times diced in its components.
Escrituras is the result of exploring the word first and then the letters, undressed, without any conceptual or philosophical content. It gradually led to their most pure forms, until they were blurred onto the abstract. Because even the Word can be integrated into the whole, in the same way the whole is sparked by it. ” Mariana Azpurua
About the Artist
Federico Vegas Chumaceiro was born in Venezuela in 1953. He studied economics at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, where he also took painting and drawing. He continued his training in Illustration and Drawing at the Art Institute Federico Brandt in his native Caracas. Individual and group exhibitions from 1990 to the present fill his resume. His work is exhibited in major museums and private collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Caracas, the Lia Bermudez Art Center in Maracaibo, the Museum of the Americas in Washington DC or the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California.
“This body of work departs from my personal fascination with words. I am totally taken by their infinite possibilities; not only by their context but also by their graphic typology. From a visual point of view, I am very much interested in the geometry of each letter of our alphabet.
The practice of interlacing the different letters is to me absolutely challenging as a pictorial phenomenon. As a result I seek to achieve a personal landscape evoking the intimacy of each word.
The invention of the written word marks a before and after in the history of civilization . I find beauty in the graphic codes of letters. It has been stimulating and Exciting to pay homage using the written word as a pretext.” Federico Vegas, visual artist
About Art | Bastion
Art Bastion is an international art agency and gallery that endeavors to discover and represent artists from around the world, and to introduce their artwork to a wider audience.
Art Bastion was initially founded as an agency to discover talented artists, to jump-start their careers and to create a globalized network via the Internet that would facilitate communication among artists, collectors, and the everyday art aficionado.
Art Bastion expanded its presence in different realms of the art world, such as art consulting for buyers/sellers, managing collections, and organizing “pop-up” exhibitions.
Though this idea continues to be a major goal of Art Bastion, the agency has diversified its role by settling in the Wynwood Arts District in Miami. By creating a multi-sensory experience through a variety of disciplines of art, Art Bastion exceeds its traditional role as a gallery.
