Durban Segnini Gallery presents a powerful exhibition on Master Manuel Felguérez, (Zacatecas, Mexico, 1928), a Mexican artist who is pivotal in understanding the evolution of abstract art in Mexico. He is also one of the major figures in the revival of contemporary Latin American art in the second half of the 20th century.

The exhibition comprises 18 large-format paintings from 2016 and five medium-format sculptures from 2015. These pieces are the latest produced by the great Mexican master. In view of a large number of works, this is the most important exhibition ever presented of his oeuvre in the United States in recent years. Since 1998, there is a Manuel Felguérez Museum of Abstract Art downtown Zacatecas in Mexico, devoted to the study and presentation of his work to new generations.

Taking the opportunity of the artist visit to Miami on the occasion of this major exhibition, Durban Segnini Gallery has organized a conversation with the Mexican master that will take place at the gallery on November 22, 2016, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will be moderated by the Cuban-Spanish art critic and curator Dennys Matos, with the participation of Rina Carvajal, Executive Director and Chief Curator of MDC Museum of Art + Design Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College. The conversation will also serve as the setting for the presentation of the exhibition beautifully illustrated catalog with a comprehensive essay by the Colombian researcher and art critic Álvaro Medina.

Manuel Felguérez is one of the major exponents of the movement known as Generación de la ruptura that openly confronted the ideo-aesthetic credo of its predecessor, the Escuela mexicana de pintura. Emblematic artists of this school are David Alfaro Siqueiros, Diego Rivera and Clemente Orozco, among others. Generación de la ruptura, is geared towards the universe of research that studies laws that condition both the material and the spiritual worlds. Hence, Felguérez’s works are geared towards an abstract language that allows him to express topics related to the world of science, of technological advances and individual freedom.
