Mariano: Forms and Identity

Wednesday, August 29 at 7 p.m.

An exploration of the life and work of this important second generation modernist, with an emphasis on his early teachers and influences, and his development of certain forms, including the female body and the rooster as signifiers of identity. Stylistic changes in his work will be noted as the context of Cuban society changed.

Portocarrero: A Joyous and Tropical Baroque

Thursday, August 30 at 7 p.m.

A focus on the life and work of perhaps the greatest of the second generation of Cuban painters. The growth and development of his style, from an early monumentality influenced by Mexican art, to his mature style, which is – without a doubt – a joyous and tropical baroque. Also to be examined, religious themes and imagery within the artist’s repertoire.

Both lectures will be held in English at the gallery: 3155 Ponce de León Boulevard, Coral Gables.
