Ever evolving, the Arts Aventura Mall program recently introduced three contemporary installations in the center’s new expansion wing, including a nearly 93-foot-tall spiral structure by Belgian artist Carsten Höller, which acts as a towering landmark and exhilarating slide.
Höller is world-renowned for large-scale artworks that transform common expectations of social spaces by altering perceptions and creating unexpected sensations – both physical and psychological. Promoting joy—or a feeling “somewhere between delight and madness”—was Höller’s purpose when he created Aventura Slide Tower.

Nearly 30 million visitors each year experience Arts Aventura Mall, which includes more than a dozen museum-quality works positioned throughout the center. Now, they encounter the new Gorillas in the Mist, designed by The Haas Brothers. The whimsical fountain, which was built specifically with children in mind, features three larger-than-life bronze gorillas and four massive bronze trees. It is a fountain and a playground.

Public art and a sense of community define Aventura Mall.
Also newly installed is Wendell Castle’s bronze, thought provoking Veiled in a Dream. Castle is best known for designing pieces that straddle the line between form and function. Here, his creation is part sculpture, part furniture, providing visitors with both an object to admire and a chair on which to sit.
Jackie Soffer, co-chair and CEO of Turnberry Associates, owner and manager of Aventura Mall along with Arts Aventura Mall director Jackie Fletcher select and commission installations designed to engage shoppers, spark their imaginations and make them smile. In the Nordstrom wing, they’re fascinated by Louise Bourgeois’ surreal Eye Benches and Ugo Rondinone’s haunting Moonrise sculptures. The word-class collection also includes pieces by Jorge Pardo, Jaume Plensa and many more.

Naturally, shoppers are excited about the new retailers and dining options that are part of Aventura Mall’s expansion wing. Still, the striking new installations offer proof that powerful art need not be confined to museums, and that a trip to the mall can be culturally enriching, inspiring and fun.
