A gentle demeanor often conceals a resolute personality. Many times, softness in speech and manner betrays a certain severity. Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove explores the tensions between these two attitudes, particularly as they exist in women. One of the featured works in the exhibition is Shedding the Shadows, Duwin’s ongoing project that re-purposes items of discarded clothing donated by Lotus House, a unique resource center and residential facility serving homeless women and infants in the heart of the historic African American district of Overtown.

The project was initiated in 2009, to enhance awareness of the transformation that occurs daily at this particular shelter, and countless others, wherein people shed their “homeless” personas through hard work and introspection to transition into a new period in their lives, one of completeness and fulfillment. This process is mimicked in the artwork: seemingly useless objects are repurposed into a series of ropes, with their connotation of strength and usefulness, and the compilation of new objects, created through hard work and introspection, is transformed into objects of beauty. These include tapestries and a dress, a series of performances, jewel-like constructions that are meant to be worn and crocheted pieces that defy easy classification.
