Until March 6
José Bechara. Pássaros geometricos e pelo menos um pássaro rectangular!
Bechara was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in this most recent exhibition of his work, Pássaros geométricos e pelo menos um pássaro rectangular! (Geometric Birds, a Rectangular Bird at Least), he continues to explore dualities. They remain traditional in that most are two-dimensional works of oil on canvas, yet contemporary in their incorporation and manipulation of rust as a medium. They include very rigid elements of geometry, but couple them with soft transitions of tones and colors.
Uisuk Byeon, Young Cho, Jessica Labatte & Briana Schweizer. The Triumph of Patience
Materials transform over time. The artists in this exhibition investigate and capture the frailty of their respective materials, while also reworking and transforming them. Working in Chicago, a city with deep foundations in labor, these artists employ common materials as a means of transcendence.Colectivo MR. Marina Garcia Burgos. Ricardo Ramon Jarne.

Kito Mbiango. 'L'Orange Elegans',
2008
Mixed Media on Canvas

Kito Mbiango. Solo Show
Mbiango draws from his wide-ranging travels and photographic experience in producing works that excite the imagination by crossing and blurring cultural borders between Eastern and Western spheres of influence. Elements of post-colonial commentary (initiated via found 18th and 19th Century engravings in the style of John James Audubon, J. Barralet, and James Fittler) and modern cultural references (through the use of turn-of-the-century photography and silkscreens) converge in a rich, complex layering of color and graphic embellishment.Above all, however, emerging artist Mbiango’s more pressing concern is the unity of both artistic and human ingredients: the integration of Eastern and Western influences seeks to peacefully reconcile the inherent cultural differences so ubiquitous in postmodern society. Overall, the goal forMbiango is to gather both art and its viewer into one stunning, deeply spiritual achievement.

Kito Mbiango was born in Brussels in 1966. He is completely self-taught in his technique and utilizes multiple production methods including image transfer and mixed media assemblage all applied meticulously by hand.

Jesus Soto
Penetrable BBL Blue, 1999Enjoy this spectacular Soto at Durban Segnini new open space in Wynwood. Soto was a Venezuelan artist (1923 – 2005). He was a sculptor and painter and is most famous for his op art and kinetic art works. Soto is particularly well known for his penetrables, interactive sculptures which consist of square arrays of thin, dangling tubes through which observers can walk. It has been said of Soto's art that it is inseparable from the viewer; it can only stand completed in the illusion perceived by the mind as a result of observing the piece.

Durban-Segnini Gallery was founded in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1970 and in Miami, USA in 1992, by its present director and owner Mr. Cesar Segnini.

Durban-Segnini Gallery specializes in contemporary painting and sculpture, emphasizing in artists who have worked with abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction and kinetic art.Simultaneously, the Gallery strives to promote and diffuse new artistic values as well as the historical vanguards that have influenced those.

Derek Yaniger. Paintings
Here is a brief bio in Derek's own words...“Okey Dokey Doggie Daddy, lemme give ya' the skinny on what makes me tick tock.

I sprung off my squawkers in 1960 in SwineCity Arkansas. Once I ponied up the bread, I split. I blew into Atlanta 'round the mid '80s and gotta gig scratchin' out art at a local sweatshop. I copped a squat there for 3 years but the cabbage was like, nowheresville, so I just had to cut out. I gave that nogoodnik from creepsville the heave-ho. I still roost in Georgia but nowadays I print my own foldin' green. Over the past 20 years, give or take, I've rolled out chicken scratchins for some way solid big wigs like Marvel Comics and Cartoon Network. Today I spend my dims and brights pedalin' my art to such mags as Atomic, Barracuda, and Car Kulture Deluxe. I also land a lot of gigs doin' prints for shows like Tiki Oasis, Hukilau, and the Wild Weekend.

Once you get a load of my art I hope you dig it the most. If it really flips your wig and you want me to scrawl somethin' out just for you, snap the whip, I'l make the trip. Here's wishin' you a one way ticket to Flipsville.

Plant ya' now, dig ya' later!”

Magnus Sigurdarson & Paul Stoppi , Beefeater, series 2009, C/print 24 x 36 in.

Until March 11
Magnus Sigurdarson and Paul Stoppi. Operation Beefeater.
Known for his witty pieces Magnus Sigurdarson is back with a ‘documentary’ tale of his trip to England. He worked in this project with Paul Stoppi and this is not the first time that both artists have worked together in collaborative projects, they also produced The Stranger: El Vikingo-Loss of an identity.Magnus’ work is characterized by a peculiar sense of humor and for being autobiographical, showing an existentialist view of life. As an Icelandic living in Miami now Magnus has been going through a process of adaptation to this environment, a situation that has made him aware of his distinctiveness. This questioning is what has driven him to look deeply at identity, hence the ‘posing’ as different characters. For this exhibition he has worked in various media: photography, sculpture and his trademark newspaper installations.

Marina Font, Untitled, 2009. El Contrato Series.

Until February 27
Marina Font. El Contrato
El Contrato (The Contract) is a series of photographs depicting a woman's journey of self discovery and identity. Although inspired by the artist's personal experience, many universal themes are presented that create a dialogue with the viewer. Gender, family, life cycles and memory are symbolically represented with elements charged with ritual and spirituality. The contract of loyalty with the fears and prejudices of the past is broken and the woman becomes free to discover herself in the many roles within contemporary society.Dina Mitrani Gallery opened in November 2008 and specializes in international contemporary photography. The gallery represents emerging and mid-career artists, offers artists talks and lectures on photography as well as photo-based books. The gallery is committed to promoting its artists, as well as working with independent curators to produce unique group exhibitions.

Magdalena Atria. Monstrous Moonshine
Magdalena Atria’s first solo exhibition in Miami presents us with a well-balanced display of her most recent works. Living and working in Santiago de Chile, Atria has developed a significant local and international career, with multiple solo exhibitions and participation in important international exhibitions at venues such as The Museum of Contemporary Art, MOCA (Los Angeles), The Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art (Austin), Bienal de Mercosul (Porto Alegre, Brasil), among others.Atria’s work connects with the modernist tradition of geometric abstraction, but with the express intent to relate it to specific visual situations encountered in the world. Abstraction within the modernist tradition searched for the absolute, for a disembodied realm of pure relations and correspondences, while Atria’s interest focuses not on the possibility of approaching pure relations but rather on its impossibility.

The main piece, which gives its name to the show, is a large scale painting made with plasticine (non-hardening modeling clay) directly attached to the wall of the gallery. Plasticine, a kind of modeling clay commonly used by children at a very young age for making small figures or similar crafts, is a material Atria has been working with for some time now, creating paintings with intricate surfaces composed of highly detailed and precise abstract images.

Fragmentary Memories
Anja Marais & Guillermo PortielesAnd Artformz Outzide Hosts a special guest performance by:The Oscar Fuentes Combo

Guillermo Portieles grew up studying art in Cuba from the I.S.A Institute of Superior Fine Arts to the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts in Havana. In the early 90’s he immigrated to the US and began winning awards and showing nationally in galleries and .

Portieles’ works are predominantly 2-dimensional, however in this show we will see a unique and compelling sculptural object accompanying his paintings in this exhibit. The figurative and symbolic works are distant yet familiar at the same time, powerfully conjuring up his recollections of youth, homeland, and way of life in a Cuba, ever-present in his thoughts.

Anja Maris’ work examines the fragility of life and identity. In the gallery her installation work addresses the same theme yet pushes one’s imagination to the edge of possibilities. She is from South Africa where she grew up and received her degree. After graduating from the University of South Africa, Marais immigrated to the United States .

Her piece in the main space is explained as a hypothesis of ‘Cellular Memory’ (also the title of the work). Cellular memory is the speculative notion that human body cells contain clues to our personalities, tastes, and histories, independently of either genetic codes or brain cells. Will your cells encoding include the sins of your fathers, will your body’s memory be inherently filled with these genetic conflicts?

This exhibition presents new work in progress from José Antonio Hernández Diez and will evolve as it travels to new venues. After its presentation at KaBe Contemporary this exhibition will travel to Periférico Caracas among other venues in 2010.This show features the Venezuelan artist’s first solo exhibition in Miami, his most recent work, an installation consisting of video and photography, reflecting the sentimental side of human beings. People who were touched by a personal tragedy, perhaps the loss of a loved one due to everyday crime, seek some sort of consolation or closure. His work explores time travel and the possibility to say one last goodbye or undo facts, such as death, thus contributing to a more humane and happy society.

This interactive installation involves the spectator in the artwork by making him or her a crucial character or symbol in the piece itself. In fact, it is not until the spectator becomes involved that the piece is really complete. Viewers will have a chance to take a photograph with the installation, making the artistic experience engaging and lasting.“Fusion is a show in which a series of individual pieces that have distinct characteristics stand together in a collaborative theme; a theme that is rich in a reflective and analytical spirit. Within this exhibit, the spectator will find “Fusion”, the piece that inspired the exhibit and gave it its name. “Fusion” is a piece that fuses time and space into reality-- a reality that results from the presence of humans and art in the physical sense of a world created by an originally artistic idea.” - Leonel Matheu

Laurie Recanati, Leila

Laurie Recanati. New Works
Throughout her work Laurie is interested in how time and emotion can be symbolized by objects. She enjoys the feeling that life can often seem quite surreal, and employs a playful approach to exploring its physicality and possibilities...Laurie has undertaken numerous public commissions across Israel. Her mosaics can be seen in hospitals, schools, gardens and offices across the county. The work includes fountains, panels, flooring, furniture and sculptures.

Laurie’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is in numerous private and public collections. Much of her work has been created in response to our disposable society. If an object is slightly damaged, it is thrown away rather than repaired and then quickly replaced. Materials such as broken china and old teapots, shattered bus shelter glass and buttons are all incorporated within her work.

By adorning discarded, functional objects she transforms the readymade, pushing “junk” into a fine art context. The metamorphosis of the ordinary into the extraordinary continues to fascinate her. Laurie is available for commissions for homes, gardens and corporate clients.

“Our past, our present and our future all influence my paintings. Each painting I create is an essential part of my inner being. My work speaks many languages, communicates on several levels at the same time. A unique psychological interaction between reality and fantasy, one that transports the observer into a dreamlike encounter with the sublime.” Daniel Bottero

Today Bottero works in his studios in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami and in Buenos Aires. Bottero graduated from the National School of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires. He earned his Master’s Degree at the Academia Italiana di Belle Arti, Lucca, Italy. From 1986 to 1990 Bottero resided and worked in Paris. Since 1990 he has lived and worked in New York. Found Object/Found Love: 30 Years of Art with Pablo Cano.
Co-Curated by Anthony Ardavin & Lauren Wagner, this celebratory thirtieth year of art will take a look back at the early work of Cano and follow him on his artful journey beginning in Baltimore and ending back here in his beloved Miami. Found Object/ Found Love will feature unique never-before shown oil paintings, figurative sculptures, ceramics and of course, his notable marionettes.
Accompanying the exhibition, Pablo Cano has teamed up with master puppeteer Jim Hammond to create “DOG”, a Shadow Puppet Play. It is a story about a Dog who pursues a “red squeaky ball” through famous paintings and sculptures in art history. The ball is used as a metaphor for each of our simplest pursuits of happiness. Using miniature style of overhead projector shadow puppetry that Jim has used in commissions by New World Symphony and The Museum of Art - Fort Lauderdale, Pablo and Jim have developed a surreal non-linear world that explores scale and two dimensional details. Keeping true with his use of found materials for his artwork, Pablo created each shadow puppet from plastic BEWARE OF THE DOG signs. “DOG” brings together art education, music and entertainment to young and old alike.

The exhibition aims to display classically trained figurative, young, emerging artists who utilize contemporary subject matters. Promising Venezuelan artist, Yvonne Cordobaexplores various esoteric themes, the most present being solitude, which she illustrates as a necessary means through which to achieve self-awareness as both an artist and as an individual.Rising Chilean talent, Max A. Kraushaar uses reflections of his own subconscious to create what he calls "Expressive Surrealistic Mixed Media. "

Flourishing Cuban artist, Eric Torriente presents works from his latest portfolio releases Outbound Tales and The Last Glaciation. The selected works from Outbound Tales are expressionistic depictions of old stories and past revelations.

Finally, breaking from the figurative, thriving experimental Spanish artist Agustin de Llanos, presents an abstract series of clean, minimalist, elegant works that play with light, dimension, textures and mediums, which he calls "shadows of absences". Anaya-Lucca is a renowned fashion photographer known for capturing the world of Ralph Lauren rethinks classic imagery as his own personal expression of events in history.

For his first exhibition of its type, Anaya-Lucca rethinks classic imagery in a more personal way, animating events in history with a curiosity that is both critical and sensual. Adam and Eve is a nude study inspired by 17th and 18th Century renaissance paintings. The images reflect the struggle of sensuality, temptation and shame that underlies the human condition as well as the joy of sexual innocence. The artist also wanted to address situations where the line between internal and external sense of self was/is in conflict throughout human history. The set design for the exhibition is also by Manuel Norena with Jed Root in New York.

Until March 25th
Mirrors, Messages, Manifestations. Patrick de Castro, in the Main Gallery space and Jacquenette Arnette and Hugo Moro’s on-site installation in the Project room.

For Patrick, the clearest thought is “change is the only constant”. By eliminating “excess baggage”, he emphasizes working conceptually, under the pretext of “less is more”. Using rich color fields, he explores form and space, and creates collages from old books, magazines and found objects. He investigates dreams and archetypes of the collective unconscious, developing symbols as images that refer to oneself and operating in a space of human consciousness that transcends history and culture.

Hugo Moro and Jacquenette Arnette are both artists that work intuitively using found materials or appropriate references freely in accordance to their motives. Just from their return from theGhetto Biennale in Haiti they wanted to begin a dialogue about the relevance and haphazard nature of communication. The experience of being in that environment using the most basic of communication in order to get ideas across and actions was impactful. The resulting work will discuss the fundamentals of perception using the construct of a double helix. The building block of life that is the most basic of constructions is as an emblem of the constructive nature of communication.

PressitonImageAlain Godon, Esmeralda, Giclée printing on museum-quality paper, 22 x 30 in.

Alain Godon
GodonAmerica is devoted exclusively to the work of French artist Alain Godon and his limited editions series. His paintings and giclée prints reveal the essence of a city - its people, culture, monuments, and architecture - and his playful imagination infuses his work with humor, that is defined by expressive lines and rich vivid colors. In April 2010, Godon visits Miami to seek inspiration to paint the city’s iconic sites and capture its international spirit. He has exhibited in major art capitals around the world including New York, Moscow, Bali, and Paris. Christian Boeringer, former Commercial Director of the Louvre Museum, and Patrice Deparpe, Director of the Museum of Le Touquet, have dedicated an entire book to Alain Godon, declaring him one of the best painters of his generation.

Alain Godon’s signed limited edition series are sold at GodonAmerica Miami, and through a network of godonDealers.

Past, Present, Future
Michael Costello, Michelle Hinebrook, Margaret Bowland, Gabriel Grün, David Michael Bowers and Claudio Ethos.
David Michael Bowers. From a blank surface painstakingly prepared with rabbit skin glue, chalk and white zinc, acclaimed painter Bowers delves into a world that has been described as “surrealistic,” “contemporary fantastic” and “illusionary,” as he blends modern themes and whimsical ideas with the techniques of the great masters.Claudio Ethos, raised in the poverty-stricken neighborhoods of his native Sao Paolo, Brazil, Ethos became deeply influenced by the calligraphic atmosphere and graffiti art on the streets around him. He decided he, too, would become a “graffiteiro,” or urban painter.

Michelle Hinebrook. “Abstraction in my work emerges through sensation, emotion, memory, physical experiences and material experimentation. I utilize fractal patterns, spatial arrangements and color contrasts to influence the viewer's perception and definition of internal and external space. I want the viewer to have an experience of the infinite. The paintings consist of interrelated layers of geometric motifs, circular, hexagonal or polyhedral lattices…”.
