Juan Navarrete, Construction No. 4, Acrylic on Canvas, 2006, 24 x 36 in.
Until October 15
Juan Navarrete. Longing and FascinationPast and present works.

Navarrete engages symbolism and impassioned color schemes to deftly appeal to our sense of nostalgia and our desire to belong. Outwardly his works depict the Caribbean landscape with abstractions of vegetation and vessels; yet further reading reveals complex overlays of genesis, permanence (or lack thereof) and sensuality. Through it all,Navarrete reminds us that the experience of exile is ever-present in his, and our, existence.

Alhambra (Antiques) is the junction of European furnishing, art gallery, and cultural space. Exhibits are curated to include past and contemporary offerings in design, painting, sculpture, photography and music.

Humberto Castro, Flora, Oil on Canvas, 2010, 42 1/2 x 55 in.

Humberto Castro. Traces of Migration

Castro’s new paintings in his third solo exhibition at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, continue to suggest the exodus of Cuban “balseros” and the U.S. “wet foot-dry foot” policy of allowing Cubans to stay if they can reach land.

“But Castro’s work encompasses much wider historic references,” according to gallery owner Virginia Miller. “These paintings are visual metaphors or fables based on the concept of historic immigration as the foundation for today’s society.” Among the paintings is an eight-foot tower of battered suitcases. “Everyone who sees this exhibition is drawn to the suitcases,” Miller noted. “All of us have special memories of trips we have taken or want to take.”

Castro, a member of the renowned 1980s generation of Cuban artists that includes José Bedia and Rubén Torres Llorca, has been exhibiting and winning awards si

Ramírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín Discipline in Painting and Sculpture /
La Disciplina en Pintura y EsculturaAbout Concrete Abstract Art

“It is not uninteresting to see how the luxuriant nature of the American continent, its intense baroque style and its magical realism have engendered a movement as rigorous as that of concrete abstract art. The asceticism of this artistic tendency seems to contradict the eloquence characteristic of everything American which manifested itself since the florid times of the chroniclers, passing through modernism until the present day. Nevertheless, that is how it has been. In Uruguay and Argentina, where the “Madí” movement was born; in Venezuela, where cybernetics and optical art came into their own; in Brazil, mother country of concrete poetry; or in Colombia, where the abstraction represented by EduardoRamírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín, among others, has flourished….” Carlos Luis

Enrique Campuzano Opus 794, oil on canvas, 19 x 15.75 in

Enrique Campuzano. Small Formats.

“When I first got acquainted with (classical) music, it made a great emotional impact on me. The exquisite mix of symphony sounds with choir displays and thunderous fanfares made the experience an unforgettable one.Later on, I discovered the structures that exist within those musical Masterpieces. Many years have passed since then, but I am still taken aback by the extraordinary spiritual and hearing capacity of those involved in their creation.

Little by little, as my appreciation for music deepened, I started discovering a more intimate kind of music; that which is created with only a few instruments and which magic has always mesmerized me.I walked the same path with poetry, going from heroic declamation to the whispering sorrows of the Sonnet.

I was born a craftsman, and I became a painter. Big formats have always been my goal, but I also enjoy the small formats to which I treat myself from time to time. “ E.C.

Explore the Culture of Nature

Nomade is paying homage to the natural environment we live in through artwork depicting the raw and abstract allure and aggression of animals, plants and peoples. One of the most distinct recent social changes in the United States has been the incredible refocus of popular culture on environment conservation and outcry.

Nomade will also have a suggested $10 donation box in place, in addition to beverages provided. All donations will go to Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund, the official foundation administering the oil spill clean-up.

The artists interpreting the culture of the natural world are Miami natives Danny Catania and Samuel Gualitieri, New World alumni Reinier Gamboa and Juan Travieso, as well as Norwegian photographer Stian Roenning, Dominican photographer Aida Tejada and French sculptor Pierre Traversat.

Debra Cortese, Morning Glory

Featured Artist for October: Debra Cortese

“Nature entrances me. The harmony and patterns, symmetry, geometry, vibrant and soothing colors, the protective camouflage for flora and fauna, healing energies, medicinal properties, the intricate beauty...

Everything on our planet shares a core energy, a vital life force that animates and supports all growth and renewal. In nature, when this energy is balanced and uninhibited by human interference, the flow is smooth, perfection exists. When I am truly in touch with nature, the feelings I experience are incredibly magical, full of wonder and joy!

My art is created with the conscious intention to share our interconnectedness with the amazingly powerful energy of nature.” D.C.
