Embellish Me: Works from the Collection of Norma Canelas Roth and William Roth
During the 1970s, artists in Los Angeles and New York boldly challenged conventional norms by pushing the boundaries of form, color, and meaning. While the art movements of conceptualism, Pop Art, and Minimalism gained significant attention and acclaim, there were also artists working with equal commitment to redefine aesthetic value and challenge established hierarchies in the art world. Many artists featured in this exhibition were affiliated with the Pattern and Decoration movement. They reveled in the handmade and sought to legitimize aesthetic ideas beyond those that preoccupied the mainstream art world,
This exhibition is presented in honor of Norma Canelas Roth (1943–2022). A tireless advocate for artists, Roth felt deeply passionate about collecting art that was often neglected by mainstream art dealers, critics, and curators. Born in Puerto Rico, she lived much of her life in Florida and remained committed to collecting in depth; in fact, this exhibition presents a selection of works collected by Roth, many of which made by artists affiliated with the Pattern and Decoration movement, which she collected extensively.
Embellish Me: Works from the Collection of Norma Canelas Roth and William Roth is presented in collaboration with the Tampa Museum of Art.

About
The museum resides in a beautiful 46,000 square foot building designed by Yann Weymouth and situated in the Florida International University Campus, in the heart of FIU’s Avenue of the Arts.
The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum's mission is to provide transformative experiences through art; collect, exhibit, and interpret art across cultures; and advance FIU’s stature as a top tier research university.
One of the largest academic art museums in South Florida, the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum provides the community with free access to world-class art that spans cultures and time periods. The museum started as a small space in FIU’s Primera Casa building in 1978. As the collection and programming grew, the university recognized the need for a dedicated museum space. To increase the awareness of the diverse artistic production of the black visual artists through lectures and exhibits.. Though blacks in the diaspora are famous for their musical and dance contributions to the world, their contributions to the visual arts are much less well known or recognized. It is the goal of the gallery and academy to increase the awareness of the diverse artistic production of the black visual artists and show their value and contribution to the multicultural heritage of the United States. The gallery provides a mirror by which diaspora artists can see themselves and understand their reality. They interpret this reality and show it to the diaspora community and the rest of the world.

Dust Specks on the Sea.
Contemporary Sculpture From The French Caribbean and Haiti.
Curated by Arden Sherman. Curatorial Assistance by Katie Hood Morgan and Marie Vickles.
Dust Specks on the Sea focuses on sculptural works by over a dozen contemporary artists from Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, and Haiti and addresses the various positionings of the postcolonial condition in this region. The exhibition’s title—Dust Specks on the Sea—is derived from a quote by former French President Charles de Gaulle, describing his view of the French Caribbean islands from an airplane in 1964.
The exhibition brings to life the slippages of past and present manifest in Carpentier’s text through a dynamic grouping of contemporary artworks, each of which responds to the novel’s vivid and violent descriptions of colonial enslavement and the struggle for Black freedom and nation.
