LOCAL LENS: JULIA ZURILLA | ARTIST

From artist-run spaces to bayside walks, Little River and Little Haiti capture the creative pulse of Miami. Artist Julia Zurilla, based at Laundromat Art Space, shares her favourite local haunts.

Which neighbourhood are you going to talk us through today, and why?
Little River / Little Haiti. I’ve had my studio at Laundromat Art Space there for several years. It’s a vibrant neighborhood where artists, galleries, and small local businesses coexist.

Where do you go for your morning coffee (or tea)?
At home – I love starting my day slowly with my own coffee ritual before heading to the studio.

A restaurant or bar you always recommend to friends?
For Venezuelan food: Doggi’s Arepa Bar – comfort food that always feels like home.
For a beautiful Mediterranean experience: Mandolin Aegean Bistro.

A gallery or museum you never miss?
ICA Miami – always inspiring, and the fact that it’s free makes it even more special.

A local artist you’re excited about right now?
I’m really excited about the work of Denise Treizman. She creates playful, colorful installations with recycled materials that transform spaces completely.

One hidden gem more people should know about?
Dale Zine – an independent bookstore and creative hub for zines, prints, and experimental publishing.

Where do you go when you’ve got a free afternoon?
I take long walks with my dog around Morningside Park or Legion Park – both have beautiful views of the bay.

If someone was visiting your neighbourhood for the first time, what’s the one thing they shouldn’t miss?
They should definitely stop by Laundromat Art Space. It’s an artist-run space and a hub for experimental projects – a perfect snapshot of Miami’s independent art scene.
