Wifredo Lam and The Black Spirit
“I wanted with all my heart to paint the drama of my country, but by thoroughly expressing the black spirit, the beauty of the plastic art of the blacks.” Wifredo Lam.
Between 1918 and 1920, Lam studied painting at the San Alejandro Academy in Havana, Cuba. In 1923, Lam moved to Spain, where he remained until the late 1930s, he was deeply influenced by the modern Spanish realist tradition but took a more simplified approach to this style. Lam is recognized as a precursor of a cross-cultural tendency merging the cultural inheritance of the African and Caribbean imageries with Western avant-garde movements such as cubism and surrealism.
