Visual artist Delsy Rubio was born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where she completed her studies in art and design at the “Julio Arraga” School of Fine Arts (1979-1985). Her love for art from an early age provided her with a prolific career as a designer, an experience she projects with a unique style in her current work. She created the graphic identity of the International Art and Antiques Fair of Maracaibo (FIAAM) in Venezuela (2004-2011). In 2011, she began her exploration in geometric abstraction.
She develops her work with various technologies and techniques, using automotive acrylic lacquer on wood and the transfer of translucent pigments at high temperatures onto aluminum, achieving optical effects of light and reflection. She also employs other materials in their pure state to highlight them through shapes. Her art focuses on the study of volume and multi-level forms, based on intangible themes; it explores the perfect geometry of nature and its relationship with humanity and the universe. Her modular designs show a harmonious connection of lines with space, creating imaginary projections in motion under the influence of light. She has received numerous recognitions, including awards at the Chess in Art Salon in Venezuela and the Origins in Geometry Biennial in Dallas, TX. Her art is exhibited internationally in galleries, museums, and art fairs in Venezuela, the USA, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and Peru, and can be appreciated in private collections around the world and in permanent exhibitions.
ARTIST STATEMENT
“My artistic proposal in the context of geometric abstraction is monochromatic and minimalist, focused on the study of volumes, reliefs, and multi-level forms, as well as the displacement of interrupted lines. These forms emerge using the circle as a base figure, extending beyond the created space to then imaginatively complete themselves upon reencounter.
The creative process begins in close connection with nature, allowing me to harmonize my mind to enrich my geometric perception and refine my ideas. I find inspiration in intangible themes, exploring the perfect geometry of my surroundings. To develop my work, I use various technologies, techniques, and assembly methods. For wood finishes, I use automotive acrylic paint, while the aluminum is pigmented by molecular transfer at high temperatures. I also explore the pure use of materials to highlight their attributes through form.
My installations are versatile and dynamic, transforming each piece into an open and adaptable design that responds to individual perception. Each installation seeks new relationships and interactions, inviting the viewer to discover their own dialogue with the space. This approach not only creates a visual experience but also fosters a unique personal and emotional interaction, enriching any exhibition space. What I seek with my work is for the viewer to go beyond the visual, to feel and experience it, establishing an intimate and reflective connection with the art.”
TEXTS ABOUT Delsy Rubio (Fragments)
“Geometric Abstraction is now a distinct and influential category of Modern Art in Venezuela. Delsy Rubio creates unique approaches to the style, technically and conceptually. Beyond the key components of compositions that are informed by rigorous attention to lines and forms based on geometric precision, her works are further dissected into interactive pieces, to fit together like a puzzle. In her latest series, she uses a special collage like technique with industrial materials that play with space, light and reflection to enhance the surface and activate simple formal elements in the viewers’ eyes.” – Carol Damian, Ph.D. – Miami
“Faced with the aesthetic proposal of Delsy Rubio, the viewer manages to immerse himself as an interlocutor in the dialogue of his volumes and make the spaces they inhabit his own. It is therefore a fortunate encounter with art, a joint celebration between the public and the artist.” – Edith Monge Silva, Art Writer – Miami
“Her conceptual and constructivist work led her to explore volumes and reliefs, developing a unique language with which she presents an innovative proposal that opens new avenues of expression in contemporary art.” – Saul Godoy Gomez, Writer and Researcher – Ccs.
