Mario Algaze, El Beso

Until April 24
Mario Algaze. Recent Dreams
Recent Dreams by Mario Algaze, are black and white panoramic landscapes of Latin America. These photographs, primarily of Peru, Costa Rica and Colombia were taken with a hand-made Linhof camera and are selenium toned silver gelatin prints.

Now, at the height of his career, Algaze's 152-page monograph titled Portfolio will be presented at the opening of this exhibition. After 40 years as a self taught photographer and having been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide, Algaze is pleased to be showing these landscapes in Miami where they have never been shown before. Algaze was born in Cuba, but has called Miami home since 1960; his photographs of Latin America are a way for him to reconcile his exile from his native homeland. His images of Spanish speaking places evoke emotion and mystery through his use of light. The streets, bars, café’s and cathedrals are dreamlike and nostalgic, yet documentary in their depiction of daily life.

“Neither for music, nor poetry, nor the plastic arts do they possess any real feeling or receptivity…Nor can one expect anything else from women if one considers that the most eminent heads of the entire sex have proved incapable of a truly great, genuine achievement in art.” -
Schopenhauer.“On Women”, 1852

Much has changed, as Pan American Art Projects intends to prove by presenting a selection of works by female artists from the gallery’s collection. The artists featured work in varying media, from painting, photography, and sculpture to mixed media, and video installations. The exhibition showcases the evolution of the female voice in the development of artistic agendas. The emphasis of the exhibit is not on feminism, but rather on the female approach to such themes as representation of the body, maternity, separation, liberation, and the environment.

Until May 1st
Second Coming. Mitch O’Connell Returns to Miami
Mitch can be summed up in 3 words: Hot, Handsome and Hunkalicious!
His stunning illustration work has been featured in magazines from Newsweek to the New York Times, on the covers of million selling CD's and advertising campaigns from McDonalds to Coca-Cola! His fine art masterpieces have been exhibited from New York to Berlin to Tokyo! His tantalizing tattoo designs are a fixture on the walls of tattoo shops around the word! His genius has been collected in three tomes, "Good Taste Gone Bad", "Pwease Wuv Me" and "Mitch O'Connell Tattoos"!

He's treasured for his sense of humor, especially when it comes to pricing his art! Likes include: keeping it real, letting it all hang out, doing his own thing and getting down! Dislikes include: gallery owners and art directors who favor artists whose work is "good"! My God, doesn't "adequately groomed" count for anything anymore in this crazy, topsy-turvy world?!

Now... prepare to enter the wild world of "The World's Grooviest Artist" himself, Mitch O'Connell!

Jesus Soto
Penetrable BBL Blue, 1999

Enjoy this spectacular Soto at Durban Segnini new open space in Wynwood. Soto was a Venezuelan artist (1923 – 2005). He was a sculptor and painter and is most famous for his op art and kinetic art works. Soto is particularly well known for his penetrables, interactive sculptures which consist of square arrays of thin, dangling tubes through which observers can walk. It has been said of Soto's art that it is inseparable from the viewer; it can only stand completed in the illusion perceived by the mind as a result of observing the piece.

Durban-Segnini Gallery was founded in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1970 and in Miami, USA in 1992, by its present director and owner Mr. Cesar Segnini.

Durban-Segnini Gallery specializes in contemporary painting and sculpture, emphasizing in artists who have worked with abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction and kinetic art.Simultaneously, the Gallery strives to promote and diffuse new artistic values as well as the historical vanguards that have influenced those.

Pepe López, Andres Monteagudo and Juan Iribarren
A Collective Sum. A collaborative exhibition of Geometric Perspectives by Three Visionary Artists.

Venezuelan artist, Pepe López creates artwork using disposable objects to represent the significance of sustainability. He uses sensible geometrics to demonstrate the physicality and tangibility of objects. Lopez invites us to view his journey and perspective of globalization by playing with representations of commercial society.

Spanish artist, Andres Monteagudo’s drawings are linear representations of negative and positive space. His work consists of wires on canvas, which seemingly lead to a tension within space and geometric dimensions. Each line seems to escape the horizon defying the limits of the canvas, making them appear three-dimensional and endless.

Juan Iribarren’s vision is to join together the incongruity between atmosphere and geometry in painting. Originally from Venezuela, Iribarren’s work reflects the evolution of contemporary Latin American art. Focusing on diagonals of light and shadows that occur on an empty white wall, which he documents on canvas. By intentionally displaying the paintings diagonally from one another creates a new irregularly shaped format showing the tension of their geometry.

Michael Flomen. Inside Out
Inside Out marks the first time Michael Flomen creates an environment with his photographic works, which continue to be a dialogue with nature. Since his 2006 exhibition at the gallery, Teeming, Flomen has experimented further into the elemental and phenomenal worlds in nature revealing visions and experiences we seldom see and feel in our increasingly expanding destruction and dominance of the planet. His new Scuptarama, a section of an abandoned building, is a stage to place and provoke the viewer of where we are, who we are, and what we are doing. .
Sterz | Naïve
In my work, lines of action help me generate drawing intuitively as well as through shapes and patterns found in many walks of life and cultures. Whether this process emerges from an obsessive compulsive disorder is a legitimate question. Ultimately, though, my goal is to relax viewers and to provoke in them an almost hypnotic state through the explorations of multiple, interconnected forms.

Kevin Hart | Line of Action
Project Room
In these pieces I am not trying to dazzle with brilliance, baffle anyone with long winded rhetoric, or generate dialogue via shock art. I just want to make work that can be enjoyed with no exclusions.

Rapture. Natasha Duwin & Henning Haupt

Artformz presents “RAPTURE”, a celebration of change and possibilities, as expressed by artists Natasha Duwin & Henning Haupt sharing an exciting capacity to express very complex ideas poetically.

Henning Haupt’s color-space paintings were completed, after relocating from Berlin to Fort Lauderdale in 2008. His work is informed by this transition to the subtropical climate combined with the troubling idea of how its wonders might transform under the current influence of ecological disaster. His series of paintings and drawings develop a lyrical theme celebrating the rapture of change.

Natasha Duwin’s work is an elaboration of ideas related to the female condition, using traditionally “feminine” techniques and non-traditional materials, such as metal and organic matter. The richness of the needlework does not call attention to itself, yet it manages to create a new environment, one of truly realized possibilities – rapture indeed!

Goody Two Shoes. New work by Leslie Gabaldon.
An idyllic world. By Maria Cristina Carbonell. (Project Room Second)

Leslie Gabaldon Goody Two-Shoes:
“The phrase ‘Goody two-shoes’, often used to describe an excessively or annoyingly virtuous person, has in recent years developed a more negative connotation, implying that the virtuousness of a goody two-shoes is insincere.“

Leslie Gabaldon’s brazenly and naughtily entitled “Goody Two-Shoes” stems from this notion and continues with the exploration sparked by “Domestic Intimacies” (2007) in which the artist entered the secret moments of a household’s everyday life. “Goody Two-Shoes” will present a series of photographic work that embodies an expression of women's sociological memory and their personal, ideological, and professional issues in the contemporary world.

Maria Cristina Carbonell An Idyllic World:
In the gallery project room, a series of paintings, sculptures, and video art compose artist Maria Cristina Carbonell’s “An Idyllic World”, a showing that translates ideas of female identity, intimacy, and being.

“An Idyllic World is the private, intimate, and seemingly schizophrenic universe of the feminine characters I have created in my videos and paintings. My heroines are inspired by Nordic fairytales as well as by old legends and myths”

Although the artist’s origins are widely different the final product is singular to each. One can see the link of creative thought that guides their artistic production inspired by a vocabulary of diverse contemporary cultures. These works address the identity of humanity by the use of the Self, Symbols and The Spirit, as metaphors.

Daniel Bottero. The Love of the Poet
“Our past, our present and our future all influence my paintings. Each painting I create is an essential part of my inner being. My work speaks many languages, communicates on several levels at the same time. A unique psychological interaction between reality and fantasy, one that transports the observer into a dreamlike encounter with the sublime.” Daniel Bottero

"Bottero is ... a poet painter, that is, a painter who uses the medium to convey the poetry of his emotions ..." Donald Kuspit

Today Bottero works in his studios in the Wynwood Arts District of Miami and in Buenos Aires. Bottero graduated from the National School of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires. He earned his Master’s Degree at the Academia Italiana di Belle Arti, Lucca, Italy. From 1986 to 1990 Bottero resided and worked in Paris. Since 1990 he has lived and worked in New York. Bottero’s work has been shown throughout the world. His paintings are featured in the corporate collections of Citibank, Xerox, Avon, Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan Chase Bank.

Arden Quin. Bolívar. Bay. Kosice. Llorens. Laañ. Rothfuss. Uricchio.
Eight artists that were part of the Madí group. Madí is a modern art movement known for bright colors and bold geometric forms. In architecture, sculpture and painting, Madí art uses abundant circles, waves, spheres, arches, spirals, and stripes. The word Madí may be originated in letters taken from the name Carmelo Arden Quin, the Uruguayan artist who founded the Madí movement in the 1940’s. Or perhaps the term comes from the English word mad, or from the Spanish description of the movement Movimiento Artístico de Invención.

The focal point of the Madí movement was a break within the figurative tradition. Some of the most original innovations of this movement were the concepts of invention as an aesthetic artistic method and the irregular or trimmed frame. The leimotiv od the Madí was to break the representation line in art in favor of the idea of presenting the work of art as an object itself, showing its own elements without any further reference to reality.

Michael Costello Paints
Childhood Myths Grown Up
The art of Michael Costello, a Boston-based contemporary realist painter, plays with perceptions of beauty, sexuality and maturity. Conventional standards of attraction are attacked and provoked in each brush stroke, while the complete image speaks of the marginalization of the individual in a society based on esthetic. His work has been described as “childhood myths grown up and, therefore, uncomfortable mirrors on our own memories and perceptions of our maturity.”

John Sutherland, a collector of Costello’s paintings and close friend of the artist, said: “I find his work a complete representation of the painter himself. Often finding as much of him as his subject matter in each work. This naturally is the hallmark of visual language at its best and what any student, collector, academic or passive patron could hope to find when pursuing another man’s experience regardless of medium or expression.”

During the past thirty years, Costello’s work has been exhibited extensively throughout New England and is included in numerous public and private collections including The Abrams Collection, The Federal Reserve, The Kemper Collection, and the Boston Public Library. In 2007, Costello was one of five artists chosen to be a Pollack Krasner Byrdcliffe Master. The Byrdcliffe Art Colony was founded by Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead to establish an environment in which artists could return to working while inspired by their natural surroundings. Michael began his artistic studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and later received a graduate degree from the Massachusetts College of Art.

Objects of Desire. Rodney Jackson and Caiphus Moore

A unique art movement has emerged combining the dynamic and interrelated worlds of comics, anime and hip-hop, with the elements of modern art. This movement celebrates its multi-cultural, international influence on science fiction, action and adventure and other confluences within and surrounding present day artistic culture. This movement is defined by an inspired, original approach to existing entertainment media that redefines the media itself. In the spirit of this, R. Jackson has coined this new genre “DON?” in tribute to the famed hip-hop producer J Dilla whose last work, the magnum opus “Donuts” left an indelible mark on that industry.

R. Jackson & Caiphus are pushing DON? into the realm of Pop Art. With DON?POP they explore the meaning of desire as it relates to spirituality in the context of popular culture. This new work challenges viewers to examine their desires and the reason they exist.

Diaspora Vibe Gallery is a multi-disciplinary art space serving as a laboratory for emerging artists of the Caribbean Diaspora and other artists of color, providing them with a contemporary sensibility to explore and experiment with new forms and cultural themes.

Installation and assemblages by Kyle and John Torina painting shown in one view of “Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted”

Wulf Barsch, Arless Day, Josephine Haden, Kyle, Richard Lytle, John Torina ConcernAbout Florida’s Environment Highlighted in ‘Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted’ Show

As developments in the Deepwater Horizon Well catastrophe continue to remind us of the fragility of our environment, an exhibition of landscapes that includes visual references to the ongoing assault on Florida’s scant remaining pristine forests and mangroves seems particularly relevant.

In her review of “Vistas: Landscapes Interpreted” at ArtSpace/Virginia Miller Galleries, art critic Janet Batet notes that “nowadays this subject matter stands as a metaphor for social and political inquiry, fertile ground for debating our positions on the preservation and future of our planet.”Highlights of the exhibition include large-scale assemblages and an installation by Kyle, fantasy landscapes by Josephine Haden, winner of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts 2008-09 Fellowship; “cosmic imagery” of Wulf Barsch, combining Egyptian and Islamic references with geometrical and astrological elements; American Impressionist landscapes by plein air painter John Torina; collages by Arless Day, whose works create a place in time like a movie director building a set; and Richard Lytle, whose paintings were included in the legendary “Sixteen Americans” exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art.

Ramírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín Discipline in Painting and Sculpture /
La Disciplina en Pintura y EsculturaAbout Concrete Abstract Art

“It is not uninteresting to see how the luxuriant nature of the American continent, its intense baroque style and its magical realism have engendered a movement as rigorous as that of concrete abstract art. The asceticism of this artistic tendency seems to contradict the eloquence characteristic of everything American which manifested itself since the florid times of the chroniclers, passing through modernism until the present day. Nevertheless, that is how it has been. In Uruguay and Argentina, where the “Madí” movement was born; in Venezuela, where cybernetics and optical art came into their own; in Brazil, mother country of concrete poetry; or in Colombia, where the abstraction represented by EduardoRamírez Villamizar and Fanny Sanín, among others, has flourished….” Carlos Luis

GroveHouse Artist
Featured Artist for June: Wendy Wood

“What I want from viewers of my paintings is for you to look closely into my art and imagine what is going on within its four corners. Look deep. Ask yourself what is happening? What can you feel from my use of colors, textures, background, sky and earth? Where is the motion taking you?

You will realize that a little bit of me is inside each of my paintings, looking out at you; as you are looking into my world. The wonderful thing is that I am a painter of all my times and therefore I am a goddess creating my own world. To paint on canvas is to create an everlasting wonderful power over a specific world on a canvas.” W.W.
