Purvis Comes Home: Manchild in the Promised Land

in conjunction with the City of Miami, SE Overtown / Park West CRA

Hampton Art Lovers presents an exclusive collection of Purvis Young (1943-2010) works.  Purvis was born in Liberty City and lived long years in Overtown, he was a visual folklorist, and an outsider to the art world. Well collected by the Rubell Family Collection, his work has been exhibited in ICA, Miami recently. The works are for sale. Young is a legendary visual artist from South Florida, his work is grounded in the experiences of an African-American man seeking Freedom in his Promised Land of historic Overtown.

The Ward Rooming House that hosts the show was built in 1925 is now part of the National Register of Historic Places, it has been transformed from a safehouse for Blacks and Indigenous people gathered during segregation to an immaculate gallery under the curatorial direction of Hampton Art Lovers.
