Toward the Celestial: ICA Miami’s Collection at 10 Years
Special Exhibition / 3rd Floor
Ground Floor / Arlene H. and Laurans A. Mendelson Gallery
Ground Floor / Barbara Z. and Sam Herzberg Family Gallery
On the occasion of its tenth anniversary, ICA Miami presents “Toward the Celestial,” a selection of works from its permanent collection highlighting the museum’s programmatic development, as well as recent commissions and previously unshown works. The exhibition is organized thematically, and journeys from microscopic to macroscopic images in order to explore the dimension of time and orders of scale. The exhibition’s title alludes to Betye Saar’s Celestial Universe (1988) banner, which was featured in the artist’s 2021 survey and has been part of installations of the artist over multiple decades suggesting both imminent presence and the recording of time through alternative ideological structures.

Huguette Caland: Outside the Line
Ground Floor / Dr. Shulamit Katzman Gallery
Ground Floor / Kadre Family Gallery
ICA Miami is proud to present “Huguette Caland: Outside the Line,” the first solo exhibition of the works of Lebanese artist Huguette Caland in an American museum. A provocative figure in abstract art, Caland (1931–2019) has only recently been recognized for her figurative and abstract paintings that render the body in subtle lines and bursts of color that are simultaneously intimate, erotic, and bold. This exhibition brings together paintings from the artist’s series “Bribes de corps” (Body Parts, 1973–76) and associated works, reflecting her preoccupation with the body and formal experimentation in drawing and abstract painting. Caland often used her own body as a point of departure; these works focus on the body as craft and caricature, expressing its subtle forms through humor, sexual expression, and formal invention.

Rose Marie Cromwell: A Geological Survey
Ground Floor / Ray Ellen and Allan Yarkin Gallery
ICA Miami presents “Rose Marie Cromwell: A Geological Survey,” the artist’s first solo museum exhibition, featuring her most recent body of work from 2022–23, in which she applies her own interpretation to the storied tradition of landscape photography. A personal reflection on identity, coming-of-age, and familial relationships, the series of photographs follows the artist, her mother, and her young daughter on a journey through the American West. Juxtaposing this deeply personal endeavor with broader social and ecological concerns, the visually compelling and moving photographs contend with the complex history of the region and the loaded legacy of artistic depictions of landscape.

“Denzil Hurley: In Praise of Use”
Ground Floor / Janice and Alan Lipton Gallery
“Denzil Hurley: In Praise of Use” brings together seven paintings from Hurley’s “Glyph” series (2012–20), one of the artist’s last body of works. A glyph is a nonverbal graphic representation, like a hieroglyph or a pictograph that employs the mark’s shape as part of its meaning. For Hurley, the glyph served as a metaphor to think of his paintings as integral forms whose meaning comes together only from their internal relations. Refusing throughout his career to rely on spatial illusion and figuration, Hurley’s paintings are stoic and matter-of-fact objects that highlight the very elements out of which they are made—color, shape, surface, and the way in which the time of their production is registered.

Alexander Calder
Sculpture Garden
Alexander Calder (1898–1976) was an American sculptor who is today regarded as one of the most influential figures in the development of kinetic art. Originally trained as an engineer before he pursued art, Calder gained recognition beginning in the 1930s for his innovative mobile sculptures, which are distinguished by their suspended and balanced elements that move in response to natural air currents.
Typically combining bold, primary colors with geometric, abstract shapes, Calder’s prolific body of work also includes wire figures, stationary sculptures, and monumental outdoor sculptures such as the subject work.

Anne Collier
Stairwell
ICA Miami presents a new site-specific wallpaper installation by Anne Collier. The artist, known for her deconstructed photographs exploring gender and media representation, creates a visually striking and thought-provoking work that transforms the museum’s central stairwell. Collier offers a critical commentary on the power dynamics inherent in image production and consumption by appropriating and recontextualizing found imagery.
